The Birmingham Area
Chapter began a program called A.R.C.H.I.E. (American Red Cross
Helps In Emergencies) in September, 1996. This program
consists of Red Cross volunteers responding to single family fires
in the area, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week..
The volunteers arrive
in an A.R.C.H.I.E. van and provide families with any immediate
clothing needs, arrangements for overnight stays, transportation,
comfort kits, canteen items and much needed human compassion.
Since it's implementation, A.R.C.H.I.E. has become a successful,
award-winning program, all thanks to our generous volunteers.
A.R.C.H.I.E. volunteers also issue
assorted clothing items, shoes, socks, undergarments, stuffed
animals for the children and "After the Fire" brochures.
Volunteers
are badly needed for assisting with this vital and caring service.

| The Birmingham Area Chapter has paid disaster services
staff as well as several hundred volunteers who assist with disaster
response in the Birmingham area and around the state. Our staff and
volunteers are also available for National Disaster assignments.
We provide emergency food, clothing, shelter and other assistance to
disaster victims 24-7 (24 hours a day, seven days a
week). In addition, our Mental Health Disaster Volunteers provide
critical assistance in debriefing families and emergency workers.
Volunteers
are always needed for helping in emergencies.
